tools/bench.html).

What is going on here
In 2024 the FlyWire consortium published the complete connectome of an adult fruit-fly brain: all 138,639 neurons and 54.5 million synapses, reconstructed from electron microscopy. In the same issue of Nature, Shiu et al. turned that wiring diagram into a model: every neuron is a leaky integrate-and-fire unit, every connection is the real synapse count signed by its neurotransmitter. With a single free parameter (the weight of one synapse) it predicted which neurons drive proboscis extension to sugar, and those predictions held up in living flies.
This site runs that same model, whole, in your browser. Every dot on the right monitor is a real neuron at its real position. A flash is a spike the model is computing right now, not an animation. Even on the title screen the brain flickers with real spikes.
How honest is it? Verified
- Port = original. The Python port (
pipeline/lif.py) reproduces the original Brian2 code spike-for-spike: 3,450 of 3,450 across the whole brain. Against the published results: firing-rate correlation r = 0.9997, MN9 at 92.1 Hz vs 93.3 Hz.
- Browser engine = port. It is event-driven: between inputs a neuron's state is solved in closed form and its threshold crossing is computed ahead of time. That is about 10× faster than stepping the neurons and gives identical spikes (
tools/bench.html).
- What is reduced. A neuron affects the network only when it spikes. We ran every experiment on the full brain offline and ship outgoing synapses only for the ~35k neurons that spiked or came within 2 mV of threshold. All 138,639 still receive input.
Experiments and neurons
- Sugar / bitter: labellar taste receptors (32 sugar, 42 bitter). The proboscis follows motor neuron MN9. Bitter suppresses the sugar response, as in real flies.
- Music: live loudness drives Johnston's-organ receptors (JO-A/B). You can play your own track: the "♫" button at the top, or drop a file onto the window; it stays in your browser. Loud sound also excites the giant fiber, so the fly startles.
- Wind / tickle: antennal-deflection receptors (JO-C/E) and head bristles. The grooming neurons are chosen from the data: the descending neurons that respond most to these stimuli.
- Light, strobe, laser: photoreceptors R1–R8. The flicker of the lamp over the chair reaches the eyes too. The strobe hits all 10,582 photoreceptors at once. The laser shines into the left eye; after a second and a half the photoreceptors in the spot start to die: in the model they stop spiking for good and their ommatidia go dark on the vision monitor.
- Shock: a shock to the body drives the 1,736 ascending neurons that carry body signals into the brain.
- Centrifuge: the chair spins: antennal deflection (JO-C/E) plus optic flow on the eyes.
- VR: threat: a looming shadow drives loom detectors LPLC2 and LC4 → giant fiber → escape reflex.
- Odor: ⚠ this is where the model breaks: a self-sustaining discharge ignites in the antennal lobe and mushroom bodies. CO₂ and thermosensors ignite it too, which is why they are not on the console. A genuine limitation: no neuromodulators, electrical synapses or detailed inhibition dynamics.
Overload, coma and death: our interventions
The Shiu model has no damage and no poisons. Everything below is our intervention on top of it, computed honestly in the same model: a blocked neuron becomes permanently unexcitable (it no longer spikes or takes input).
- CNS load: spikes of every neuron except the receptors we stimulate; 100% = 60,000 per second. If the load stays above 100%, a countdown starts; without RESET the neurons "burn out": the most overdriven first, then the rest. The threshold and the burn-out are our interface; the discharge itself is the model's.
- Tetrodotoxin (TTX) blocks sodium channels: neurons stop spiking. In the model: a wave of blocking from the neck, where the toxin enters the brain with the hemolymph.
- Neonicotinoid: an agonist of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, the main excitatory transmitter of the insect brain. We scale excitatory synapses by 1.5 and add excitation from the body. That is enough to throw the whole network into a seizure: the model sits close to the threshold of such a discharge. A neuron that fires 25 spikes in the seizure dies (excitotoxicity); the rest fall silent as the receptors desensitise.
- Nitrogen (N₂): without oxygen a wave of spreading depolarisation crosses the insect brain, the neurons fall silent and the fly goes into a coma. In the model: a wave of reversible blocking; oxygen brings the neurons back. Over 40 seconds: death.
- Saw: legs and wings reach the brain only through the ventral nerve cord, which the model lacks, so severing one is an injury signal through the ascending neurons. The antenna sits on the head: its side's Johnston's-organ neurons fire a discharge and fall silent for good, after which music and wind reach the brain only through the other antenna. We leave the antenna's olfactory neurons alone: their burst breaks the model.
- View from inside: the compound-eye image comes from a camera in the eye, but every ommatidium is tied to a photoreceptor and an optic-lobe neuron and goes dark when those neurons are blocked in the model.
Flight
The model has no body or nerve cord, so we connect the brain's outputs to a simple flight model. Turning comes from the left/right difference of DNa02 firing, wing power from DNg02, a sharp manoeuvre from the giant fiber. The autopilot drives DNg02; you "break into" the brain with the arrow keys, injecting spikes into those neurons.
What it is not
"Fear", "interest", "stress", "hunger" are labels for circuits, not measured emotions. Hunger is an interface variable. The model does not feel pain: we only see which circuits fire. The explosion, the tanks of previous subjects and the figure down the hall are the artistic part.
